Background, History, Position and Direction
Trident Rubber Inc. was founded by Bill Shields in 1985 in the Pittsburgh, PA area. This followed a hostile takeover of Shields Rubber Corporation, a third generation family business in which we owned the largest, but not controlling interest. Shields Rubber was a large industrial rubber and hose distributor with seven locations (two of which also specialized in marine hose). Five years after the take over, Shields Rubber was sold, and its marine hose division was spun off to Sierra Supply, then to Morse Controls, and then to Teleflex. They remain a competitor with no family connection.
Bill Shields’ history in the marine hose industry began in 1961 at Shields Rubber during college breaks. This was followed by a career in the U.S. Coast Guard as an officer and search and rescue (SAR) pilot. This provided an intense experience in the marine environment, boat safety and the results of the lack of it. He rejoined Shields Rubber in 1980 after his father’s death, and served as Executive Vice President and Manager of the Shields Marine Hose Division until 1985. He also served on the SAE Marine Fuel Systems Subcommittee which drafted the SAE J1527 Marine Fuel Hose Standard in 1985, and he remains active on this and three ABYC committees.
Considering this back ground and history, it is natural that Trident Rubber should have an intense focus on marine hose quality, performance, durability, reliability, standard conformance and consistency; in the interest of long term SAFETY for the boater.
Today, Trident Rubber is a company that continues to grow successfully by providing only the highest quality marine hose and related products. We design, specify, source, private label, certify and supply – marine hose, tubing, ducting, conduit and flexible wet exhaust connectors to the marine market worldwide. We also build and supply Marine LP Gas Systems for this market. Our primary customer base is the boat builders, distributors and repair yards that require and want the highest quality marine hose available. Our main office and warehouse remains in the Pittsburgh area. We have satellite warehousing in St. Augustine, FL and New Orleans, LA; and satellite offices in St. Augustine, FL and Victoria, BC, Canada.
Trident is the oldest North American marine hose company and brand, under the same ownership. We are #1 in quality and service. With the 4th generation of our family hose guys firmly in place, we plan to continue to grow and to serve this market, with the same intense focus on quality and safety for many years to come.
